The Raines Family was from the south. Raised on a mountain top in Spring Creek, North Carolina, Bertha Raines was the eldest child of seven children. She had an 8th grade education because she had to quit school to help bring in the crops. Bertha could ride a horse and work with a crosscut saw better than any man. She was the child of Hard and Sophie Plemmons
Chuck Raines was born in Del Rio, Tennessee. The youngest of six kids, he had four brothers and one sister. They lived in the Cherokee Nation around Rocky Top mountain. Chuck and Bertha came from a long line of singers who would sit on the front porch after a hard days work in the field, and sing old folk songs. They had three boys, Danny, Bobby and Ronnie.
